Rest: The importance of slowing down…

Recharge your life with rest.

It seems we live in a society where we are expected to just go go go. Rest is considered indulgent and most people I meet these days feel guilty at the thought of taking a minute just to do nothing.  True?

Now obviously we live in a world where we cannot just put our legs up and hope that some one else will do the work for us.  Work and school are non-negotiable and if you are a mother, I am very well aware that there is very little time. Rest becomes this foreign concept, far out of the realms of the possible.  Already you are probably raising your eyebrow to this topic and wondering how I am expecting you to rest.  I can almost hear you all shouting across the Internet from your computer, “ I have babies to feed! Bills to pay! A new job I need to perform in! A nagging child at my knee! A million things to do! How do you expect me to rest, Jess?” My best friend who is a full time equity sales trader just texted me sarcastically after I suggested she have some rest, “haha rest is nice hay- no time for rest”. And it is true; she has very little time to rest.
Read on and find out how you can incorporate rest into even the most crazy lifestyle.

What I’m saying is that taking a moment in your life to rest and recuperate could do wonders for your day-to-day life. It will recharge your ability to deal with your commitments, your relationships and your overall health and wellbeing with MORE vigour and energy. It’s a worthwhile investment of time, because the efficiency of a well-rested mind will make every area of your life more productive and joyful.
When you just go go go, without taking a minute you are actually mentally and physically exhausting yourself. Remember your mind and body are intrinsically connected.

A rested body is a healthy body!

More than that, studies show that sleep and rest are essential building blocks of the body and mind: you learn better if you take a nap after studying, and retain more information long term. You become stronger and leaner more quickly if you periodise your training (taking rest days, and easy weeks), and you avoid the dreaded corporate ‘skinny-fat’ figure that is driven by cortisol and relentless effort. You are exhausting yourself!

Pushing your body into overdrive will manifest physically through tight neck and shoulders and usually digestive malfunctions such as, gas, bloating, acid reflux and all the symptoms attendant on an imbalance of good and bad gut flora. A stressed body cannot digest food properly!

We all are dominated by our sympathetic nervous systems (fight and flight) and we hardly activate our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair).
We breathe shallowly from our chests rather than from our diaphragms., signalling to our nervous system that stress is coming. Oh oh!
Because of this you can say hello to hormonal havoc in your body as cortisol and adrenalin are being pumped through your blood without you even knowing it; the boost of these hormones long term causing your body adrenal exhaustion and an overall hormonal imbalance that can lead to some nasty complications such as depression, weight gain, estrogen dominance, insulin resistance (stress has a direct impact on your blood sugar levels), chronic fatigue and fertility issues. And of course this will accelerate the ageing process!! Hello wrinkles!
What’s worse that this? People nowadays are adding extra stress to their already stressed out life. “I need to run for an hour today after work!”; “I need to see this friend and that friend!”; “I have a to-do-list that is never ending!”; “Weekend is here- I have so much to do!”. You should be resting on your weekends!
Mentally you are internalizing a lot of negativity and losing touch with your own body, which will result in emotional turmoil. You’ll end up with the worst version of your own self – stressed, tired, mentally slow and physically vulnerable. Well what do you expect, you are never taking time to be present in the present moment. You are out of touch with your own life!

Celebrity Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder says it right “ Our society puts too much emphasis on constant “doing”, without recognizing that in the recharging space you can come back to work, duties and relationships in a more productive, enhanced way. Whether you are a mom, a college kid or trying to make your way in the corporate, art, (fill in the blank) world, you may come to a time when you just push and push and push and then leave yourself stressed out and incapable of being the best you can be.”

Any of this sounding a little like your own life?

Well then!

Please, try to take a moment, a few minutes out in your day – even a few minutes a week if daily practice is impossible. If even a minute a week is impossible, just take a moment in the month to REST, to BREATHE. Put it in your calendar! Add it to that overflowing to-do list. Treat it like work or family commitments, because it is ESSENTIAL to life. Your body works so hard for you all day everyday, treat it like your temple and give it some time to replenish. You wouldn’t leave your car to run without a service! You even let your computer sleep! Treat yourself with even that level of respect.

When you take the time to sit and rest even for a few minutes a day (this is why meditation is so powerful) you are allowing for your body on a cellular level to recharge itself. Having a simple bath or shower with a few diaphragmatic breaths can be enough to just re-infuse your inner light.
Because when you do you will actually find that you are more present and have more energy for your children, partner and greater clarity of mind to perform at work and to get through the day without being angry at the world.

You need rest to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

What I do to incorporate rest into my life:
  • Daily meditation practice
  • Daily breathing exercises- 20 diaphragms breathes every night before bed time/ as you awake in the morning.
  • Yin exercises rather than yang- yoga, tai chi, body balance class at your gym rather than a spin class! Restorative exercises- simply lying in Savasana yoga pose 2x/day Learn how here
  • A daily bath with lavender oil
  • Herbal tea and ½ hour of reading a magazine
  • 15 mins/½ hour brisk walk
  • Tea with a friend
  • Massage – get your blood flowing!
  • Ayurveda treatment- hello healing!
  • 8 hours of sleep- You know this by now!
  • Acupuncture to restore energy flow
  • 1 hour of baking/cooking a treat
  • 1 hour of my favorite TV show – TV is relaxing, who cares!
  • I say ‘NO’ to social arrangements when I am feeling overwhelmed and instead I choose the time to lay low, read, walk or go for a massage. Your friends will be there for you – if you can’t go to that party then arrange to meet for a walk or some tea! Go to yoga together!

A note on physical activity: My clients know my thoughts on this.

Science is telling us to exercise less, but smarter!
Give the excessive exercise a break- it is making you age!

We are not designed to push our bodies to the limit, day after day. Yes, we must keep active, but general movement, play and 2 or 3 half hour sessions of interval training a week is enough for our bodies to burn energy, keep hearts healthy and keep our metabolism at optimal level.  I am repeating myself I know, but if we overdo the gym we exhaust our adrenals, which are a central part of our endocrine system hormones. Overtraining in this way depletes us, and leaves us hormonally unbalanced, releasing the toxic stress hormone cortisol, which enhances belly fat storage and leaves you suffering from fatigue, insomnia and musculoskeletal breakdown.

Rather than churning and grinding on a cardio machine for hours each day, try lower impact activities with a mental health aspect to enhance your joy and body-awareness.

I am a big fan of yoga, pilates or body balance to get you back in touch with your real self.

It is ok if you wake up some days and think ‘today is a day I need to give my body a rest.’ When you are in balance your body will tell you what it needs! It is ok to listen – your body is smart!

Now, can you all go away and incorporate some rest into your life? Please.

Affirmation of the week: I have balance in my life.

URBAN REMEDY- MY 3 DAY CLEANSE

I chose the 3 Day Cleanse, which seemed like a reasonable amount of time.

It’s a daunting prospect to change ALL your nutrition habits in one go, but anyone can do anything for three days so I figured I’d give it a shot and report back to you.

The drinks are readymade and require no preparation so you can transport them with you wherever you go! Easy!

Note:  I took 3 days off work and study to do this. But this can be done while being at work or sustaining a busy lifestyle.

What it is…how to do it… Why Jess, Why?

Why, you ask? I have been meaning to do a detox for ages and this was the perfect opportunity! No - not to lose weight, but because I know how important it is for us to give our bodies a bit of a break from the hard work we put it through every day! Also, it’s becoming more and more important that we occasionally get a boost to help us flush out the inevitable toxic build up in our systems. Not because our bodies don’t detoxify us naturally, but because we live in a modern world where unexpected toxins are piled on from all directions. Our ancestors never had to process a world where plastics infused meat, or where pesticides and hormones suffused every part of the food chain.

So I was determined to give a detox a go, and this is how it went!

Day 1:

Feeling excited and motivated about the 3 days ahead! I take a good look at myself, so I can have a baseline to look back on three days from now. I’m in decent nick. My skin is looking okay, slightly dry.

[7am] I wake up. Swallow 1 liver tonic tablet.  According to the write-up, this mixture of herbs and minerals will accelerate the elimination of waste from my body. I then go straight to the kettle to make my warm water with lemon followed by a 20 minute transcendental meditation.

Next I go for a 30 minute jog to start my week on a energized note. A good beginning!

[9am] Breakfast time!  The first bottle that presents itself to me is the ‘Cleanse and Renew smoothie’: a mixture of spinach, avocado, raw vanilla, banana, and chia seeds. I have to admit, it was slightly bland but had a delish texture and was very filling. I followed it up with ‘dessert’ – a chai tea with raw almond milk and stevia.

[11am] Tea time: Took 4 chlorella tablets! –
What is chlorella? It is a water grown algae (natural food source) that is full of chlorophyll. Chlorella cleanses the body by binding to toxins and carrying them out of our systems. It is a potent antioxidant that is high in protein (60% complete protein in free amino acid form), rich in vitamin C+E, magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids and so many other magical vitamins and minerals. It cleanses the blood and optimizes the oxygen in our blood. Great for alkalizing the body, reducing acidity and eliminating heavy metals.  Impressive profile huh!?
Now sipping on my lemon, cayenne pepper, stevia water whilst blogging away! Refreshing!

[12pm] Epsom salt bath here I come! ( Epsom salts are high in magnesium. Great for detoxifying and muscle relaxation)

[1pm] Lunch time!! Spinach, cucumber, lettuce, celery and mint juice. You can just feel how good it is for you (but boy it tastes bad! yikes! It BETTER be as good for me as it feels!)

[3pm] Now for another 4 chlorella tablets in my belly!

[4pm] Tea time: Sipping on a cucumber, carrot and ginger juice. I like this one!! And now that I have the taste of ginger on my tongue I want more! Time for a chai tea with almond milk…mmm!

Despite not having eaten anything solid today, I feel strangely ok and actually quite energized.

[7pm] Dinner time: Slotted in a transcendental meditation sesh! Looks like my schedule has a lot more time in it now that I’m not worrying about food prep!
Dinner is a spinach, cucumber, parsley and mint drink .eummm…. Maybe not QUITE my thing, you know? Or maybe it’s an acquired taste. I have to admit, the detox slump is setting it. Im starting to feel pretty tired and I kinda just wanna chew on something!!!!

[5pm] Epsom salt bath and my Patrick Holford book ‘secrets of healthy ageing”. Excited for sleep. My cells are ready for the rest and rejuvenation.

Ps: been sipping on purified water with chlorophyll all day! I am such a supplement junkie!

Day 2:

9am: Can’t believe I slept in till 9am! (very late for me)! My body needed it I guess.
I wake up feeling kinda empty/hungry, but I know there’s two more whole days to go!!!!

[9:30am] Quick shower and then 20 minutes of my transcendental meditation… I feel much better after the meditation, and can face the rest of the day. Sticking to the positives, I just had a quick look in the mirror and I must say that my skin is glowing and super clear!

[10am] Pre breaky: Lemon water + liver tonic tablet.
Breakfast! Not sure if I am excited or not.
Cleanse and Renew smoothie: spinach, avocado, raw vanilla, banana, and chia seeds. I decided to blend it up with ice! I need texture!

[11am] Time for some Acupuncture with my magical Chinese medicine man to balance my energy flow! Excited.

[12:30pm] 6 chlorella tablets. Toxins get outa me!
+  sipping on lemon, cayenne pepper, stevia water + chai tea.

[1:30pm] Lunch time:  K im hungry! I want a crunchy salad !!! Instead, I’ll have a liquid salad!  Spinach, cucumber, lettuce, celery and mint juice. I added a scoop of natural whey to it (shhh).

[3pm] 6 chlorella tabs with my carrot and mint juice and meditation time..

[7pm] Dinner: I am weak. “ How do people do these cleanses for more than 3 days?”, I asked my boyfriend, trying not to gnaw on his arm. “madness”.

[8pm] Kardashian episode and chai tea with almond milk and cinnamon.

[9pm] Epsom salt bath and lights out at 10pm!

Day 3:

[7am] Opened eyes. Mirror check motivated me yesterday, so I will do it again! Oh yeah, Skin so clear and glowy. I take 2 liver tonic tablets and lemon water before my Meditation.

[9am] Off  to Jivamukti Yoga in Newtown. They have a vegan cafĂ© next door the yoga that does the most phenom green juices I will be having that instead of the designated urban remedy breakfast one. (Gotta do what you gotta do).

Yoga was so invigorating, and I didn’t feel a lack of energy at all! Beautiful practice with beautiful people.

[11am] Off to meet my Indian Gurus @Ayurvedic Wellness centre  for an Abhyanga treatment. Recommended for soothing the nervous system and stimulating the immune system.

Benefits of Abhyanga:
  • Good for circulation
  • Good for muscle tone
  • Opens up the creative mind
  • Relaxes body and mind
  • Flushes toxins
  • Helps prevent circulation in-balances
  • Promotes youthfulness and vitality
  • Rejuvenates the skin
Now that was blissful. I’m taking this three days to do a wholistic health kick, as I want to give these juices every chance I can! (Im relaxed..ultra relaxed but oh gosh Im hungry!!!)

[12pm] Quick shop at Dr earth for some B complex vitamins and chai tea. Can I chew the B vitamin tablet? Oh god, Im going mad!

[1pm] I blended up my green smoothie for lunch with ice and almond milk.

[3pm] Feeling good. I am amazingly energized. I down the Carrot, cucumber and mint juice + 6 chlorella.

[4pm] Time for a gravity colonic. A bit daunting! Is there even anything left inside of me? What could possibly be excreted out?!
I ask my darling friend Leanne who does my colonics (Release clinic) who has been doing it for over 20 years and she says she is still stunned by the amount of toxic build up and residue we all have clogged up in our colons (no matter how healthy we think we are). Certainly, I feel much more detoxed afterwards! :O

I’m secretly so excited this day is coming to an end because that means I’ll be able to eat tomorrow. Also, it will mean I have achieved 3 days of cleansing!!

[7pm] Dinner: Spinach, cucumber, lettuce, celery and mint juice. Ok I have kinda had enough now. I wasn’t too keen on this juice the first day, and I am even less keen on it the third time around.

DONE! Phew.

Overview:

I feel good. I must have lost about 2/3 kilos (water weight people!) and my skin is glowing. I have lots of energy! My body is clean and happy! Alkaline test: Perfect pH! Expected ;)

I recommend it to those wanting a quick cleanse, and ideally you’d start it on the weekend, so you can support the food cleanse with some healthful cleansey type activities. It’s not for the faint hearted, but like I said at the beginning – you can do anything for three days!
I think I will happily do a cleanse every 3 months! Thanks Urban Remedy.
